Bar Anita, the true soul of Ibiza

Located in the beautiful and picturesque village of San Carlos is Bar Anita which has its roots firmly set in the modern history of Ibiza.

It is one of the oldest bars on the island and is famous for its post boxes and the artwork which adorns its walls and is often referred to as the original hippy bar.

Today the bar is like stepping back in time of ibiza modern history as you walk through its tree covered courtyard with wooden furniture and through its doors into the main restaurant.

The story is that in the 60s and 70s artists, writers, artists and musicians looking to escape Franco’s dictatorship of mainland Spain alongside the hippies who were looking to escape the political and economic situation in their home countries set up home in secluded country houses or communes away from the populated areas of Ibiza.

Bar Anita became their place to go to take in a relaxed drink or meal it also acted as the local post office. It also had one of the few telephones available for public use at that time, very important for those looking to connect with the outside world.

The post boxes can still be seen today and some are still used for the far flung villas which are not on the main postal route. The artwork which adorn the walls is said to come from artists who were unable to settle their bar tab and paid with their art and offers a wonderful insight into Ibiza rich artistic heritage.

Today little has changed the selection of food and drink on offer is authentic and varied. You can order almost anything you like from a quick coffee with a croissant or pasta to sardines and Montaditos (delicious toppings on toast) or an Ibizan salad or well the list goes on and on.

But we highly recommend the Tortilla de Patatas (Spanish omelette with potatoes and onions) which is loved by the locals and hit the spot perfectly.

They also make their own Hierbas, Ibiza’s favourite liqueur and it is well worth a try after a hearty meal, it does not disappoint and is without doubt some of the best not the island. You can also buy your own bottle from the bar as a moment of your visit.

The prices will amaze you and will leave feeling full and very contented with change in your pocket we estimate a meal with drinks cost us around 14 euros per person.
