Sailing around the waters of Ibiza by Zoe Newlove
Being out at sea, sailing around the waters of Ibiza without a care in the world is by far one of the best feelings ever. With the scorching hot weather that July brings, there is nothing better than feeling the sea breeze against your skin and then jumping into crystal clear blue waters to cool off.
There are many ways to explore the beautiful Ibiza coastline, but thanks to the guys here at The White Isle Ibiza, I have recently discovered Chilli Pepper Charters and I cannot wait to share my experience with you all today.
Chilli Pepper Boat Charters is run by a local Ibicenco family, and they have been running boat trips on their traditional Ibicencan boat for well over twenty years. You can find them in San Antonio not far from the marina, alongside the waterfront. They offer all kinds of trips, including afternoon and sunset excursions, taking you around the coastline of San Antonio and beyond.
Some friends and I decided to experience one of their afternoon boat trips. Hiring your own private boat for your friends and family can be quite an expensive affair here in the peak of Summer, so it is refreshing to come across a company that offers a really great and affordable price for a standard excursion.
For a 3 hour boat trip in the afternoon, beginning at 2 pm and finishing at 5 pm (times alter as summer progresses), you only have to pay 50 euros per person. For children, it is 20 euros. This includes a range of alcoholic beverages and soft drinks.
We were greeted by a lovely lady called Sofi. Her family run and charter the boat trips, and with the immediate warm welcome, I knew it was going to be a great afternoon.
Joining us on the boat trip were all kinds of people, a small family, a few couples and a small group of friends over on holiday. Each trip can take a maximum of 20 people. The boat is super spacious so we still felt like we had our own private experience. I definitely felt like we had the best seat in the house too, perched right at the front.
We sailed towards Cala Bassa, one of the most beautiful beaches along the west coast of Ibiza. Out at sea, the crew were chatting to us about Ibiza and the surrounding smaller islands, as well as telling us about the local history. Did you know that Ibiza was invaded by pirates? It felt wonderful to get to learn more about Ibiza. There is a lot more to this island than super clubs and parties, that’s for sure.
Our first refreshment stop was by some caves, which gave everyone on board the chance to get into the water with snorkels (which are provided). It was amazing to have some time to swim, even for those like me who are petrified of fish.
I felt so at ease and relaxed with the Chilli Pepper crew, that I even braved snorkelling myself. I am terrified of putting my head under water, but everyone else around me appeared to be having so much fun, I just had to give it a go myself.
I was so proud of myself and feel a lot more confident in the water now. I wasn’t quite ready to try cliff jumping, that was just a step too far for me in one trip. We swam around some caves and explored the underwater marine life. I often forget my home here in Ibiza is an island of paradise, so it was a great reminder of just how beautiful this place is.
Next stop Cala Comte, home to the most stunning turquoise blue waters, where we swam some more and then took some time to simply relax and soak up the sunshine.
Throughout the trip, we were supplied with a great music playlist, from reggae to rock, which gave the boat a really nice vibe. The atmosphere on board was just really chilled and every single person who joined us really enjoyed the trip.
Three hours was the perfect amount of time to spend aboard the boat, and as we sailed back to San Antonio, I felt really content. The trip had been so lovely and I was already looking forward to planning future trips with friends and family.
If you’d like to have a private boat charter, you just have to organise it with Chilli Pepper in advance and they can arrange this for you and your friends. I’d really like to experience their Sunset charter too this summer, and I hear that on occasions you can sometimes see dolphins too!
A huge thank you to Chilli Pepper for having me and my friends on board sailing around the waters of Ibiza with them. It was a truly wonderful experience and for sure I will be back again very soon.
