The Familiars of Santa Eulalia

Santa Eulalia is one of the most vibrant resorts on the island with its bustling cosmopolitan town, blue flag beaches and recently opened Nikki Beach Club only a walk away.

It’s a perfect destination for families or those who want a more relaxed experience than the major resorts on the clubbing scene have to offer.

Many people return year after year once they have enjoyed their first holiday here, but one little fellow in particular has burst back onto the scene in the town after many, many years absence.

Very small and stooped and frankly decidedly ugly this little guy is taking the resort by storm. He´s cute, in a Rumpelstiltskin sort of a way, and most of the time you will find him hanging out where the action is in the centre of town. In fact he has several friends of his kind that you can spot in various places around and about.

Nobody knows his name but collectively these little pixies are known as Fameliars and their existence has been the stuff of local legend for centuries.

The Fameliars you will find now are very beautifully made statues paying homage to these intriguing creatures, but it is claimed that they have been summonsed by townsfolk for centuries when they needed help with any hard labour.

Let us introduce you to the Fameliars which are dotted around Santa Eulalia

Over the river in the town, which incidentally is the only river in the Balearic Islands, is a bridge with foundations dating back to Roman times. Legend has it that to summon a Fameliar of your own you need to go to the bridge at daybreak on 24th June, the holy day of St, Juan. You must take with you a black glass bottle.

Once there you will catch a fleeting glimpse of a special flowering herb which appears and disappears in the blink of an eye. If you can gather some of these flowers you then need to seal them in the bottle. When the bottle is opened the Fameliar will be released with a cry of “Feina o Menjar!” which means “Work or Eat!” These are the only things this little fellow can do, and so the only words he knows. He will labour hard for you and complete any task to perfection in double quick time. The problem is however, that if there is no work, or when he has finished, he will then empty your larder of every last crumb of food, leaving nothing for you!

The legend of the Fameliar has made a comeback in recent years and he has become a symbol of the town’s history. You can spot the little ones in the photographs around the area of the Town Hall including the chap with the lamp, but he is rather shy. You will have to hunt a little harder for him! If you need a clue then remember he prefers the Ibiza underground scene. He not a raver who likes secret parties but he has his lamp for a reason!

Once you have tracked down all the city gents in the Fameliar family you might like to take the children to the newly built park (ask for the Mercadona park or the Fameliar park) Here you will find their fun loving large purple cousin in the picture below. A great photo opportunity for the kids!

Remember though, if you are here in June on the day of St Juan, and are tempted to try and summon the strangest Ibiza souvenir ever taken home, that there was one poor unfortunate man in 1744 who was imprisoned for claiming under oath to be the proud owner of his own Fameliar!
