The Boats of Ibiza
Being an island you cannot help but notice the boats of Ibiza – an integral and essential part of daily life.
Whether it’s the fishermen who leave in the early hours to provide the freshest fish for the restaurants, the daily ferries to and from Formentera and mainland Spain transporting people and essential supplies, the huge cruise ships that pass by or dock on the island.
Not forgetting the multi million pound mega yachts, the daily boat trips and small hire boats, or of course the party boats taking revellers out to sea for a unique experience sailing on the waters around Ibiza is part of the seascape and the many harbours.
We all have a sense of nosiness and its always fun to know that little bit more, whether its the name of a boat or the person who owns it, its recent location or even what its actually like onboard, our thirst for knowledge is unquenchable.
However, thankfully the modern world has an app or two to help with our knowledge quest and although not all boats are covered many are, add the fact that many of us are getting free or cheap data while we are in Ibiza its never been easier to get an insight into the boats of Ibiza.
We use a couple of applications on our phones, both of which do the same thing – show near real time locations of boats and ships with their previous tracks, some even have pictures but above all most include the name of the vessel.
With this information a quick google search can provide you with a wealth of information, pictures, owners and all sorts of random information is available at your fingertips to help you amaze and eventually bore your travelling companions with.
Not all boats especially the smaller ones use the system these apps rely on (Automatic Identification System) but it does give you access to information about many of those you can see.
The apps we have found which work the best in Ibiza are Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder both are available on ios and Android as well as their own stand alone websites.
The apps both have endless features and can be as simple or as in depth as you like.. They are all based around zoomable maps but for a bit of fun and extra knowledge both are a great companion when looking out to sea from Ibiza or anywhere in the world for that matter.
