There are hedgehogs in Ibiza, who knew?
So, as happens on a regular basis in our random Ibiza travels, we find out something new about the island and this was no different. There are Hedgehogs in Ibiza, who knew?
To back up a little we had been invited by dear friends of ours to spend a few hours catching up with them at their house high up in the hills of Ibiza.
In such a beautiful and quiet setting where all you could hear was the wind rustling through the pine trees and the birdsong the conversation soon turned to the wildlife of the island.
We ended up comparing the wildlife and birdlife between the UK and Ibiza and both islands have Woodpigeons, House Sparrows, Frogs and many other species but being told that hedgehogs thrive here on the island blew me away.
I’m not sure why, maybe it was that second glass of Heirbas we had over lunch but this one tiny piece of information really captured my mind.
For the next few hours, anyone I ran into I asked the question “Did you know there were hedgehogs in Ibiza?”
99% of which looked at me oddly and replied, of course, there are or yes I’ve seen them or yes and I’ve volunteered at Can Hog the hedgehog rescue centre in Ibiza.
Located in Port des Torrent Can Hog is a rescue and rehabilitation home for orphaned hoglets, a place where they can be raised and released back into their natural habitat.
You can find out more about Can Hog via their facebook page here.
It turns out the hedgehogs here are a fantastic predator to the snakes on the island and are well loved although roll back 50 years and they were a staple part of the islander’s diet, especially during the war years.
Thankfully those days are past and now they are well loved and respected by the Islanders.
We have been coming to Ibiza for 8 years now and we are still learning new things about the island on every trip, which is fantastic and also what keeps our intrigue and interest for this beautiful and magical place going.
The moral of this story is no matter how well you know Ibiza or anywhere else for that matter there is always something new to learn.
So when you are on holiday or away from home get out of your comfort zone, take time to talk to the locals and the long-term residents, you will be blown away by what you don’t know about the places you visit.
I mean there are Hedgehogs in Ibiza who knew? Well, apparently it turns out everybody but us.
